Songs for Worship

Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.  Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.

Psalm 33:1-3 (NIV)

Celebrate

Background

This song was written for the 100th anniversary celebration of the congregation I serve, St. John's Lutheran Church, in Napa, CA.  It is based on Psalm 145 which was chosen as the theme Scripture for the school year for St. John's Lutheran School, along with its theme, "Celebrate."

Psalm 145 celebrates the goodness of God, his compassion and grace, and the wonders that He has done.  The chief wonder is the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Following the psalm, this song ties the celebration into sharing the good news of what God has done with the nations.  Praise and Thanksgiving is linked to Witness and Mission.

Lyrics

Verse 1
I will praise Your name, O God, my King.
Every day I'll lift my voice and sing.
Your mighty acts and wonders,
Your cross and empty grave
Your goodness and compassion
And Your awesome power to save.

Verse 2
You are gracious, Lord, and good to all.
You are near to hear us when we call.
Fulfilling the desires
Of those who trust in You.
I celebrate Your righteousness
In everything You do.

Chorus
Celebrate! Celebrate Your goodness!
Celebrate! Celebrate Your love!
I will praise Your name among the nations
And celebrate the wonders You have done.
Celebrate!

Verse 3
