This song is a paraphrase of 1 John 4:9-11. In this passage, the apostle connects the love of God to our love for each other. The horizontal love in our lives is to be modeled after and empowered by the vertical love from God, centered in the cross of Christ. This is is the basic shape of our lives as we seek for follow Jesus and be shaped into His image. 

When this love of Christ for us is shining through us, then we can live in unity, pursuing one mission as one people.
