I Will Remember

Background

God calls his people to remember Him, His promises, His commands, and all that He has done. The wonderful gift of memory is used by the Holy Spirit to comfort, encourage, and guide us in our walk with the Lord. But the call to remember means much more than cognitive recall. It refers to taking to heart and applying to our lives the things that we are recalling.

In 1 Chronicles 16:12-15, David calls on the people to remember God’s “wonders, miracles, and judgments.” No doubt He was referring to the acts of creation, as well as the mighty acts of the Exodus, God’s redemption of His people and making them His own. As New Testament people, we are to remind ourselves of God’s mighty deeds centered in Jesus Christ, along with the Word that proclaims these deeds, and gives to us the victory that Christ has won.

But remembering goes both directions. The Bible also refers to God remembering us, and remembering His covenant and promises. This is not to imply that God forgets. Rather, when the Bible speaks of God’s remembering, it indicates that He is about to go into action in light of what He is “remembering.”
