Make Us One In You

Background

This song is based on 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 and the liturgical text that frequently appears in the ancient communion liturgies as the elements are brought forward or set aside before consecration.  It is a prayer for unity, that the unity embodied in the one loaf and one cup be realized in the church’s life in the world.   It is a pray that the Lord would “make us one” as we partake in this meal.

Our unity as Christians is a twofold reality, an example of the now/not yet tension that permeates so many  facet of the life of the believer.  We have a unity now that is far beyond wishful thinking.  We are one in Christ, and this unity is most beautifully displayed and embodied in the Lord’s Supper.

At the same time, we are not unified.  So long as we remain in this fallen world, led in part by our sinful natures, there will not be true unity — neither among individual Christians, nor within the Church.  And yet we pray for it, and long for it.  One of the blessings of eternity is the complete realization of this unity.   In this way, the Lord’s Supper is to provide a “foretaste of the feast to come” in picturing the unity that will be ours in the new creation.
