Songs for Worship

Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.  Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.

Psalm 33:1-3 (NIV)

On The Wings Of An Eagle

Background

God's strength is our comfort and power in times of affliction.  The beautiful close to the 40th chapter of Isaiah depicts the strength of the Lord for his people.  When we feel our weakness, when the troubles of this world are weighing on us, we rely on the Lord he lifts us on eagles wings.  The same Lord who suffered and died and rose again for us will sustain and strengthen us for every trial.

This upbeat anthem was written for the 1998 graduating class of St. John's Lutheran School in Napa, CA.  Since then it has become the "school song."   As such, it is the title track for the recording of the songs written for St. John's Lutheran School.

Lyrics

Chorus
Lift, Lift me up on the wings of an eagle
Soar, Spirit, Soar!  Lift me high, high above!
I call to you. My strength renew
Come fill me with your power
Lift me up into the sky to fly

Verse 1
You are God, my Lord
Everlasting you are
The mighty creator of all things near and far
My strength is only you, your cross and empty grave
Yours alone the healing hand
Yours alone the power to save

Verse 2
When I'm weak, O Lord
When I stumble and fall
When my soul has grown weary and my back's to the wall
I just call on Your name, my Holy God on High
Give me strength so I can run!
Give me wings so I can fly!
